The Mt. St. Helens Club is southwest Washington’s oldest & favorite
outing club. Currently with 100 members & growing, the club
schedules hikes (almost) every Monday and (almost) every Saturday
year round. During the winter, hikes are often replaced by x-country
skiing & snowshoeing. Other outdoor activities include biking,
camping, canoeing and picnicking.
Monday hikes are Easy to Moderate: (3 to 7 miles & less than 1000 elevation)
Saturday hikes are Moderate to Difficult (5 to 12 miles & over 1000 elevation).

Cowlitz Americorps Network (CAN) will be working with the Longview Housing Authority (LHA) to refurbish and beautify the Stratford Apartments. The Cowlitz Americorps Network is part of The Corporation for National & Community Service that focuses on community needs which serve children and families by giving one-on-one guidance and assistance in order to make a difference in their lives. Part of The AmeriCorps Pledge states “I will get things done for America-to make our people safer, smarter, and healthier.”
Armed Forces Day was created in 1949 under President Harry Truman when the “military was unified under one government department.” It serves many purposes including being a day to honor and acknowledge Americans in the armed forces. The CAN has chosen this day as one of their service projects to help those in need in our community.
LHA has made a commitment to honor veterans by implementing the Veteran’s Integration Program (VIP) for homeless veterans. The program helps veterans by providing housing, case management and employment.
CAN, partnering with LHA are refurbishing and beautifying The Stratford Apartments in readiness for future veteran tenants. The goal is to provide safe housing for veterans.

Cowlitz AmeriCorps Network and Longview Housing Authority's Veteran Integration Program are partnering together to refurbish the Stratford Arms Apartments for a new housing project for our homeless veterans.
Quite often these homeless vets come to us with just the clothing on they are wearing and need everything. To be able to have these items needed we are asking for donations the following items.
Toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, conditioner, razors, shaving cream, blankets, pillows, doederant, bath towels, wash clothes, and body wash. The items listed above must be new. The following items may be new or gently used: pots and pans, dishes, silverware, glasses, cooking utensils, garbage can and bags, a shower curtain and hooks, can opener, kitchen knife and cutting board, measuring cups and spoons, brooms, mops, dustpan and a utility/mop bucket.
The Humane Society of Cowlitz County will be at the Three Rivers Mall in the former Fibre Credit Union Room from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. with adoptable pets. Saturday, May 19th, you can enjoy walking tours of Japanese Garden at Lake Sacajawea Park, led by former Park Superintendent Al George. Meet at 10 a.m. at the children’s playground at Kessler & Hemlock. The event is expected to last about 1 and ½ hours, and dress for the weather.

Stageworks Northwest Theatre is holding an open house Saturday, May 19, at its new home, 1433 Commerce Ave., which the theater company purchased in February.
Originally a movie theater, the spot in recent years has been used for punk rock shows and as an indoor skate park.
Stageworks is in the process of remodeling the building to use for live theater. The company plans several staged readings and a weekend of ghost stories this summer.
Come meet us and see where we've been and where we're going!
