The Mt. St. Helens Club is southwest Washington’s oldest & favorite
outing club. Currently with 100 members & growing, the club
schedules hikes (almost) every Monday and (almost) every Saturday
year round. During the winter, hikes are often replaced by x-country
skiing & snowshoeing. Other outdoor activities include biking,
camping, canoeing and picnicking.
Monday hikes are Easy to Moderate: (3 to 7 miles & less than 1000 elevation)
Saturday hikes are Moderate to Difficult (5 to 12 miles & over 1000 elevation).

The Humane Society of Cowlitz County will be at the Three Rivers Mall in the former Fibre Credit Room with adoptable pets from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. All animals are current on shots and micro chipped; cats are spayed or neutered. The 2:00 pm dedication of George Bales Community Center will be led by Pastor Rick Hayes and focus on the:
PAST – Reviewing the history of the George Bales Gym built in the 1970s and used by the community for over
30 years. Includes the winter of 1980 when the roof collapsed due to snowfall, and the 2011 controlled burn by
Cowlitz 2 Fire and Rescue of the 1970s structure to make way for the new building. Introduction of
guests including Elenita Bales, widow of George Bales.
PRESENT – Recognition of volunteers, construction workers, and donors, plus speaker Mike Karnofski, Cowlitz County Commissioner.
FUTURE – Plans for use of the George Bales Community Center, including basketball, volleyball, and youth programs,
plus indoor exercise and other group events.
The George Bales Community Center is an outreach of Rose Valley Friends Church.
It is assessed at $1.3 million and features a standard high school size basketball court,
3 classrooms upstairs and a full kitchen. All general contracting was donated by local corporations
and hundreds of man hours were donated by church and community members to bring the project to fruition.
